„Wollt ihr den totalen Krieg?“ Dies ist ein Eyecatcher im „N 64 Rockstar Magazine“ auf Seite 55 für das Spiel „CALL OF DUTY: Modern Warefare 2“. Eigentlich wundert man sich inzwischen nicht mehr über solche geschmacklose Entgleisungen. Neu ist allerdings schon, dass dabei eine Nazipropagandarede in einem werbefinanzierten Game Heftchen benutzt wird. Partout eine Rede, die den Krieg in eine neue Dimension gehoben hat.
Dieser Claim ist nichts mehr als das Ende einer langen Entwicklung in der Gameindustrie.  Galten in den 80er Jahren Spiele wie das Arcadespiel wie CABAL als noch leicht seltsam und Spiele wie BlitzKrieg zumindest als geschmacklos, so hat sich das Blatt gewendet und der einfallsloseste Teil der Gameindustrie hat auf das Pferd „hyperrealistischer“ Krieg gesetzt.

Seit Wolfenstein und Doom beackert eine Industrie den Acker „Kriegsspiele“ intensiver oder zumindest „pseudorealistisch“ (Eine Waffe in den Händen ist weit anders und mitnichten so clean wie die Spiele das Virtuelle als „realistisch“ verkaufen). Kriegsspiele waren lange Jahre der einfachste und billigste Weg Jugendliche und Früherwachsene zur Kasse zu bringen und das mit immer demselben Rezept. Dabei ist die Faszination für Egoshooter vermutlich eher in der Spielmechanik verankert, die stetig Druck aufbaut, als in der Gewalt des Inhaltes. Aber Jugendliche ködert man am Einfachsten mit etwas, von dem sie keine Ahnung haben: Krieg. Die meisten werden vermutlich auch nicht im Entferntesten daran denken, in einer Armee zu dienen. Denn da kann man ja wirklich sterben und sein eigener Steuermann ist im Krieg kein einziger, da wird befohlen und gefolgt, alle anderen liegen auch bald im Graben getötet von Offizierspistolen.
Und dennoch ist es leicht peinlich, wenn dann Vertreter genau dieser Eyecatcher-Industrie hinstehen und für das Game den Kulturbonus einfordern. Zwar ist in einer postmodernen Kultur erklärtermassen alles Kultur, aber Firmen wie CryTek fordern eben Hochkultur für sich ein und das muss hier gesagt werden: Crysis ist kein Hochkulturprodukt. Es ist technische Hochkultur, aber der Rest ist maximal auf der Stufe von Hollywood, das eben auch schon keine allzu grosse Ansprüche an unsere Kultur stellt sondern Filme vom Mittelmass fürs Mittelmass produziert (Avatar verwendet nun sogar die gleichen Grund-3D-Modelle). Lustigerweise fallen dann am Ende auch noch die Meister in der Produktion von Claims – Politiker – auf die Werbeclaims der Gameindustrie herein und nehmen die Kriegsclaims für bahre Münze, was dann bei den Gamern und Gameindustrievertretern zum Kopfschütteln führt. Eigentlich sollten die Gameindustriellen stolz sein, denn sie haben zumindest jemanden davon überzeugen können, dass es sich bei Kriegsspielen um Killerspiele geht. Traurig. Das einzige Trostpflaster ist der sinkende Anteil der Egoshooterspiele am Spielemarkt in den letzten Jahren.
